Team of brothers shines at Smart Scapes

Jon and Kurtis Ford are brothers who stick together—even at work. When they approached Bob Smart, CSP, seeking an opportunity at  Smart Scapes in Olmsted Falls, OH, they wanted to do so as a team. They got their wish and have become a terrific snow-fighting tandem.

Jon (the younger, outspoken brother) performs some plowing and primarily takes care of the sidewalks while Kurtis (the older, “subtle” one) focuses on plowing and bulk salt applications. “They both have become exceptional snow team members,” Smart says. “Even though we set a well-laid training plan in front of them, they immediately picked up on the job and the importance of the job requirements.”

Jon has supplied his own equipment to assist in the sidewalk clearing and recently offered to purchase a plow for his 4-wheeler for use on sidewalks. Their dedication and willingness to do anything necessary to perform their jobs and to assist others is beyond the norm,” Smart says.

“What we have at Smart Scapes isn’t just a group of great friends building a company from scratch, but more like a family with the same future goals in mind,” he says. “They both have proactive attitudes, which when combined with their work ethic, shows in the quality of their work. Our clients love them.”

Hosmer team’s success can’t be duplicated

Each winter Hosmer Services Group LLC faces an enormous task in servicing a major manufacturer’s 110-acre site in Webster, NY. The right team must be in place to manage approximately 5 million sq. ft. of parking lots, 6 miles of sidewalks, 6 miles of roadways and 70 loading docks, while also keeping 455 doorways and more than 500 post indicator valves and fire hydrants clear. The team also maintains a separate site for the company.

It’s a good thing owners Ted and Kham Hosmer have the right team—led by Account Manager Chip Crawford, Crew Supervisor Chris Fanelli and Mechanic Tony Romano—who stepped up in a big way last winter. The area near Webster endured heavy and blowing/drifting snows from December to April. Kham Hosmer, CSP, says that while they make a great team, each team member brings an individual excellence to their role with the company.

Crawford joined Hosmer in December 2010, bringing with him 20 years of experience in property management and equipment operations. Adept at planning, organizing and supervising snow removal, Crawford easily settled into his role with Hosmer. In addition to his planning and management skills, Kham says that Crawford’s computer skills and training documentation helped the team more effectively and efficiently deliver service.

Fanelli has been involved with the account since 2007. His home is close to the site, which allows him to get a jump on operations. He monitors the weather and calls the crews to make sure they are prepared as the storm approaches. While the storm is raging, he is in constant contact to ensure everything is running smoothly.

Romano has been on this dedicated team since 2008. When he’s not busy getting the team’s equipment fleet up and running, he’s plowing his own route or repairing breakdowns. “He lifts everyone with his positive attitude and spirit. He is fast and efficient putting the equipment back into service, and he always does it with a smile on his face,” Kham says. “We’re fortunate that individual all-stars like Chip, Chris and Tony help make a great team. They make sure all areas of the property are safe and clear, ensure smooth operations and prevent shutdown of any part of the facility.”
